My Personal Comics History Pt.1
With Comicon International: San Diego starting today I thought I’d give you a quick rundown on my own history as a comics reader, collector and unfortunately investor. I blame my parents. In the late 70s we took car trips everywhere and generally the morning we would head out my dad would swing by Westhaven Pharmacy to buy some drinks and snacks and let us boys peruse the comic rack for something to read. I don’t remember if DC didn’t have much space then or not but invariably Jay and I ended up with Marvel Comics in our laps. Addicted by these irregular trips I began riding my bicycle to Westhaven and spending my hard-earned allowance on them. Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel Two-In-One were my favs among many while Jay simply collected Fantastic Four. It was a simpler… and cheaper time. I had quite a few 25cent comics but by the time I was spending my own money most of them were 35cents. As a “Marvel Zombie” I pretty much collected all of the titles at the time Marvel published and tried lots of new ones; Master of Kung Fu, Star Wars, Logan’s Run, Godzilla, Nova, US1 and Rom come to mind first. Cheap and fun, most of these issues ended up stacked in my closet, under my bed or selling them off in garage sales to buy action figures. Ah how times would change.
