Laughed a lot. It’s not going to be a classic or anything but Tropic Thunder was good entertainment. Funny lines, OMG moments, and more than a few “I can’t believe they just did/said that”. Jack Black and Ben Stiller were exactly what you expect them to be, i.e. themselves, but Robert Downey Jr. was exceptional as he played an Australian actor portraying a black soldier in this movie about a movie being filmed that took place during the Vietnam War. Maybe I mentioned this in my Iron Man review but I have been a huge fan of RDJr since I saw him in Chaplin. The man has so much talent it blows me away. It really truly does, probably the finest actor of his generation. Kudos to Brandon T. Jackson and Jay Baruchel who play the two “normal” actors alongside these three misfits and not only hold their own but steal quite a few scenes themselves. Keep an eye for out them to start turning up a lot more often and make a name for themselves. Lots and lots of cameos by Hollywood stars which for the most part have fun playing themselves for a laugh. Most noteably s Tom Cruise though who plays a Hollwood producer. If I didn’t think of Cruise as such a whack job these days I would have enjoyed a lot more. Still amusing though. Nice to see him not taking himself so seriously. Anyway if you’re at all like me and couldn’t make it before now to see this movie I recommend you find the time. It surely doesn’t have much more time in the theaters but has enough big budget effects to warrant not waiting for it on DVD.
I am king of getting things started. Unfortunately I’m not getting things done. I noticed today how many unfinished projects I have around here. I cleared the flower beds but didn’t lay down new mulch - removed and sanded down the kitchen cabinets but haven’t painted them yet - put a new refridgerator, stove and dishwasher in but still have the range hood sitting unopened in its box - laid down weed guard, wood chips and a nice rock wall alongside out house but haven’t fninshed covering the rest of the kids play area. Do I have issues or what?
The commercials for the soon-to-be-released DVD of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull movie brought back some painful memories and the fact that I hadn’t said anything about it when I saw this piece of crap in the theater. Whoops, does that count as a spoiler? Seriously, this movie was so bad. I admit there were some cool Indiana Jones moments, too few and far between but they were there, that brought back some of the excitement and emotion we all probably felt the first time we saw any one of the three earlier installments. Yes even Temple of Doom, which upon first viewings suffered horribly against Raiders of the Lost Ark, now seems a masterpiece when compared against this mishmash of bad ideas, horrible dialogue, lousy acting, outrageous ending, and even worse a never-ending series of “homages” to actual cinematic classics that just seems completely out of place in the pulp adventure world of Professor Jones. A word of advice: Buy the first three, call it a trilogy and try to wipe the fact of this fourth installment’s existence from your brain.
Today was a lot of fun. Jessica had Jury duty so it was just me and both kids today. I don’t think I’ve ever had a whole day with just the two of them. I’ve had Erin for days at a time but with the two of them Jessica has almost always been around or at most just gone for a few hours. But this was great. I made breakfast and did the dishes before we played, then Erin and I picked up the whole house practically during Jacob’s morning nap, then came lunch and a trip to the park before we came back and both of them went down for a nap. It wa s a great day! Now I just gotta go plan a dinner before my civic-serving wife gets home. See ya!
So Jacob just turned one and now all of a sudden he’s up and walking. Within a week he went from 2 or three stumbling steps to crossing whole rooms (awkwardly adorable) without falling once. There are times when it feels like he’s been around forever and then things like this happen and I feel like my time with him has passed so quickly, too quickly. Even more so with Erin who is three and a half and just owns me. We’ll be having the best moment and all of a sudden I picture her getting married and it just breaks my heart. Gotta kick myself so as not to forget to enjoy the moment instead of wallowing in despair fo the future. I wouldn’t trade a second of fatherhood.
Okay Palin is a bit of a nutter isn’t she? How in the world can this country even consider voting for McCain when it puts her next in line for the Presidency??
